Privacy Policy

Zero data collection
OpenRead was built privacy-first. The app runs entirely on your device and does not collect, transmit, share, or sell your personal data. We operate no server that your content passes through — nothing about you is sent to us.
What we do and don’t do
- No accounts: you never create an account, give an email, or sign in to use OpenRead.
- No tracking or analytics: there are no third-party analytics or tracking SDKs watching how you use the app.
- No ads, no advertising IDs: the app is ad-free and never uses the advertising identifier (IDFA).
- On-device storage only: your books, chapter text, bookmarks, notes, reading position and settings are saved locally with Apple’s native frameworks — they never leave your device.
Speech runs on your device
The text-to-speech engine ships inside the app. The enhanced Vietnamese voice pack is a separate one-time download you start yourself, and once it is installed nothing further is fetched. Either way, text you listen to is converted to audio locally on your iPhone or iPad — no sentence, page, or book is ever uploaded to a cloud service for synthesis.
Content you import
- Files you import (text, EPUB, PDF) are read and stored on your device only.
- If you use the built-in browser to save a web page, your device connects directly to that website — the request does not pass through us. That site's own terms and privacy policy apply to your visit.
- Nothing you import is indexed, mirrored, or backed up by us.
Content and ownership
OpenRead does not host, own, or control any of the content it can read. Books, documents and web pages belong to their respective owners. The app simply helps you read and listen to material you already have the right to access — you are responsible for what you import, and for complying with the rights and terms that apply to it. Everything is provided as-is, with no warranty.
Permissions the app may ask for
- Files: only to open a book you explicitly pick from the file picker.
- Network: only for two things you start yourself — downloading the voice pack from our server, and opening a page in the built-in browser. The voice-pack download is an ordinary file transfer: it sends us nothing about you or your books. Reading and playback never require a connection.
- OpenRead does not request the microphone, contacts, location, photos, or the camera.
Children
Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children either.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change this policy — for example, if an optional feature that touches the network is added — we’ll post the update here and adjust the App Store privacy labels so you stay informed.
